A lovely and very collectable piece of English ceramics from the Cinque Port Pottery, in Rye, East Sussex. This pottery first began in the late 1950's and moved to The Monastery in around 1964, changing the name of the company to Cinque Ports Pottery, The Monastery, which it kept until changing the name again in the 1980's. This piece is believed to date from the 1960's to early 70's and has been glazed in a combination of dark browns and almost black colours.
The inside of the pot is glazed in a smooth glossy very dark brown glaze and the exterior has a lovely textured appearance where a rough matt black metallic glazed pattern has been applied over a swirling and mottled lighter brown lustre style glaze. The effect is very striking and pretty, reflecting the light in multiple different ways from the piece.
The underside of the base of the vase is bare cream ceramic on the rim with a white central glazed disc, bearing the manufacturer's stamp in black.
Over all it is in good vintage condition, with the exception of a very small chip to the rim on the base and a little superficial crazing to the glaze inside the vase, as shown in the photographs.
The vase measures approximately 26.5cm tall and 10cm external diameter across the mouth of the vase. The belly of the vase measures approximately 44cm in circumference at the widest part.
