A wonderful old Doulton Lambeth hand made glazed large jug believed to have been made by Doulton prior to receiving the Royal Warrant in 1902 and prior to the name change to Royal Doulton. This beautiful old jug is therefore thought to date to the late 19th Century.
It has been beautifully made and retains all the rustic charm of a hand made piece of pottery with little dents and knocks made in the clay prior to firing and other marks from the artists who worked on it.
The jug has some lovely moulding and appliqué decoration that has been applied to the outside of the jug and then finished by hand. The handle has been added separately and has a lovely fleur-de-lis style appliqué added to the base of the handle. It is quite beautifully done.
Inside the jug the glaze shows the natural light buff colour of the clay and on the outside the jug has a dark brown finish. Although this dark colour finishes neatly in a line around the middle of the jug, it also filters down in a speckled salt glaze style into the lower part of the outer jug.
There is an inscribed ring around the top of the jug neck.
This beautiful jug is in very good condition. There are no cracks, crazing or chips. It measures approximately 18.2cm tall and 18cm wide from the back of the handle to the front of the body. It holds a generous 1600ml approximately, with room to spare, and it pour very well with no dribbling.
The jug weighs approximately 1230g empty.
The base of jug has been left bare of glaze and has the manufacturer's mark indented into the clay along with a letter 'T' and some scoring marks left from manufacture.
It would be perfect for use as a table water jug or even for Pimm's or other punches or cold drinks when entertaining. It is however, so lovely that it could just be used as a purely decorative item or even a vase for flowers.
