A lovely pair of Aynsley, England, china demitasse coffee cups and saucers believed to date from the 1930's. These pretty little cups are very decorative. One cup unfortunately has a small crack in the base of the cup, otherwise they are in good vintage condition. There is some light crazing inside the glaze when examined very closely. Also the gilding has some wear in places, mainly in the saucers. There is a little discolouration on the unglazed rim of the underside of the cup and saucer from age.
The china is very fine and when held up to the light the pattern can be seen through the cup from the inside.
The cup and saucer sets are identically patterned, however one is coloured in shades of yellow and gold and the other is coloured in yellow, pistachio green and gold. They are very dainty and pretty featuring delicate cross hatching in gold, swirls, flowers and leaves. Aynsley often made what is known as Harlequin designs with different colour items within a set so it is likely that these were meant to be a mismatched colour set.
The handles are delicately decorated with little golden dot and blue bell shaped flowers.
Each piece is marked with the green Aynsley stamp on the base. One of the saucers also has a hand painted number on the underside that appears to say 4523.
The cups hold approximately 100ml each. The cups measure approximately 5.3cm tall and 7cm wide including the handle. The saucers measure 11cm diameter and 1.5cm tall.
