Maple and Co, London, was founded by in the early 1800's. It developed into a prestigious upholsterer and interior decorator company, which held Royal warrants throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They originally manufactured items themselves in house, however as the company grew they sourced items from other companies and sold them on with their own logo.
Items of china made by Spode, for example, also carry the Maple and Co back stamp. This lovely jug only carries the Maple and Co back stamp and is believed to date from the late 19th Century to early 20th Century. It is most likely designed as a wine carafe or jug and is elegantly designed with a double sided spout and no handle. It has a very classical shape and has been decorated with a mixture of printed and hand painted colours. This wine theme is carried on via the use of grapes, vine leaves and a claret coloured hand painted rim and shoulder line. It is very pretty and very functional as well as decorative and would elevate wine serving at the table.
The jug measures approximately 9.5cm across the widest part and is approximately 13.5cm high. It has a capacity of approximately 550ml up to the narrowest part of the neck.
It is in lovely vintage condition with no damage. It does have a few tiny pin prick manufacturing bubbles in the white glaze, as was often the case in items of this age. There is also a very slightly visible mould seam line down each side where the two halves of the mould were joined during manufacture.
