The Calder Valley was a major area for industrial textile mills working cotton, making thread and weaving, dating back many centuries. As factories closed and techniques changed some of the old industrial pieces of equipment were repurposed. This set of coasters was made from cut and polished sections of the worsted bobbin flanges used in the area's textile mills. The dates on the coasters suggest the original materials date back to the 1913-15 period and the set is made in the Arts and Crafts style, although these were probably made into coasters later on in the 20th Century. The 4 bobbin coasters are positioned between flanges and have been mounted on a piece of rustic looking wood. Green felted material has been attached to the back of the coasters and the holder and printed with gold lettering detailing the history of the piece.
They are quite industrial looking, a bit rough and ready but the wood is lovely and generally in good condition, although there is a small crack in one of the coasters. The colour has become quite variable and worn in places, the metal around the edges of the coasters is slightly rusted, again making them look very rustic and industrial. The green felted material is in good order. The stand measures 8.5cm tall and 15cm diameter. The coasters are each approximately 10cm diameter and 1.5cm thick.
The distressed look are really what make these look quite different from modern coasters.
This listing is for the set of 4 coasters in their holder only. All other items in the photographs are for display or size comparison purposes only and are not included.
