This is a beautiful capture of a very handsome Doberman or German Pinscher in what appears to be acrylic paint on velvet. The piece is titled 'Spencer' and signed by the artist C. Rigby Noakes. The age of creation of the piece is not known but the style of frame suggests the 1970's or 80's, although this is a guess.

The frame measures approximately 29.5cm long by 21.5cm wide and is approximately 2cm thick. The velvet has been stretched and stapled over wood and then framed.

The painting itself is absolutely lovely and captures the dog with great attention to detail and love. The painter has captured the eyes, nose and contouring of the subject particularly well.

He has a focused, but soft and relaxed expression and kind, warm eyes. A beautiful boy.

The velvet is a dark brown, however as the painting surface is a rich cotton velvet it does vary the background colour depending on how the light hits the lay of the velvet fibres, ranging from a warmish dark chocolate brown when looking down upon or straight at the painting, to a slightly paler brown if looking upwards at it.

The paint itself is lovely and there again the colours do alter a little in bright sunlight and indoor light. The photographs and video were taken in natural light close to a window so I think they represent the colours quite well.

The item is in very good vintage condition. The velvet is clean and in very good condition for its age. The paint work is still intact and pristine. The frame is made of wood which has been stained in several shades of brown to look darker and antiqued, and then highlighted around the inner rim of the frame with a gold coloured gilt paint. The main frame is rounded and simple in profile with a second shaped rebated area in the interior of the frame. The frame shows a few minor dents and scratches and these could be easily minimised with a wipe over with a dark scratch cover preparation, but overall the frame is in good vintage condition. It has been sealed using paper picture sealing tape over a hardboard back, with 2 silver coloured metal eyelets and a nylon cord hanging loop. The paper tape has begun to detach from the top of the frame but this could easily be rectified by the new owner if desired.

If desired, I'm sure the name 'Spencer' could be fairly easily brushed off with gentle use of a small stiff brush, or covered over, however, it is nice to see the image of this lovely dog immortalised and still recognised by his name.
