  • Details
A strikingly different and bold looking vintage china oblong platter or tray believed to be by G.W. Grindley & Co Ltd in their pretty Penelope design.

This pretty piece has an Art Deco feel to it and has been hand painted over a transfer design. It would have probably been made for the export market, as much of their pottery was at that time. The design name is printed in gold coloured gilding on the back along with 'England' in black print. There are a couple of painter's brush strokes. There is no maker's mark but the design name places it as made by Grindley in Stoke-on-Trent.
The piece has a delightfully rustic little twist and saggy bow to the ceramic base that gives it a rather charming and unique look and it could be that this piece was originally rejected as a misfire second and never received the manufacturer's stamp.

None the less it is a beautiful and brightly coloured piece that is getting on for 100 years old. It would look delightful used as a cake or sandwich plate, but would be equally at home on a shelf or dressing table as a catchall or trinket tray.

It has pretty cut outs on the handles and is in good vintage condition with no significant post manufacture damage . Certainly a bit different!

This lovely platter / tray measures approximately 29cm long, 14.8cm wide and 2cm tall.
