A lovely antique Spode hot water warming plate printed in green underglaze in their British Flowers pattern number 1.
This lovely old earthenware item would have been filled with hot water and would have been used to keep food warm while serving. It is embossed on the back with 'spode' and '11' and also printed with SPODE in green, along with a stylised letter 'A'. The letter style denotes that the item was printed and finished by workman group 11. The use of the printed back mark style can be dated to after 1784 and it is thought that this piece dates from around the early 1800's to 1830's. The plate measures approximately 25cm in diameter and 27.5cm at the widest part including the water filler spout. It is approximately 5.5cm tall. Being earthenware it is quite thick and heavy, with the bowl weighing just over 1.1Kg empty.
It is in good vintage condition overall but has sustained a few chips. There are 2 large chips to the under rim of the plate and two more to the foot rim of the base. On very close inspection there is some glaze crazing. This is best seen on the close up of the base photograph.
