Beautiful mid century, turned wood salad bowl by Don Alexander. Made in New Zealand, this lovely bowl is an excellent example of sapele mahogany wood, showing the typical character and beautiful markings of the wood type. The rich swirls catch the light and shift between a rich chocolate brown and luminous chestnut as the light changes. This is shown in the photos of the interior of the bowl where I have moved between direct sunlight and indirect light.
The bowl still has the original label attached to the base and measures 12cm in depth from the base to the rim and 19cm wide across the top of the rim. Overall it is in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks, but there are a few minor scratches and dent marks in the wood from use over the years. It has clearly been cared for during its life so far and is a lovely vintage piece that has many years of use still to come. It is not suitable for dishwashing and should be carefully washed in warm water after use. A little kitchen chopping board oil every now and then will help keep it glowing.
