A lovely and beautifully coloured hand painted French Henriot de Quimper plate. This lovely item is believed to be from the early mid 20th Century and was hand painted by in the Quimper region of France. The date is not known for sure. It is marked in hand writing with the manufacturer and possibly the initials of the painter.

It is a superb colour that is vibrant and striking. I have also photographed it out in the sun as this really shows the colours up brightly and shows how it looks both indoors and out.

The clay base of the plate is a light grey/cream and this has been painted on the face of the plate with a rich royal blue, black and bright yellow. The blue rim has been over painted with small stylised feathers and little sunbursts. In the centre of the plate the natural light clay colour has been allowed to show through and has been painted with matching little blue and orange flowers and green foliage. It is a very striking and pretty plate. The feather type decal has been reintroduced along the black rim band

It is a very striking and pretty plate and may be a one of kind. Certainly it has been hand painted and so will be unique even if the design has been replicated on another piece. I have not been able to find another that looks the same.

It would make a lovely piece of original wall art or a pretty cabinet item.

The plate has suffered some damage over the years and has a chip and a fine hairline crack on the bottom edge of the plate. The crack only goes a few cm into the plate and the plate is still structurally sound. When viewed from the front the chip is barely visible.

The top glaze shows some superficial crazing throughout the plate but all the art work on the plate is intact. When looking at the plate like the face of a clock with the central flowers and foliage in the correct orientation, the chip and small crack is approaching 6 on the clock face. Between 7 and 8 there is an area on the inner black ring with the diagonals where the top clear glaze has not filled in all of the raised diagonal brush strokes and this can be seen on very close examination when the plate is tilted into the light. On the back of the plate the rim of the foot is partially glazed and a little rough in places. Three is a central swirl that looks like where the potter has cut the plate free from the wheel, suggesting the plate was hand made too.

I have tried to point out all areas of interest and concern, but please look at all of the photographs and the video as these form part of the description and help show scale, colour and condition of the item.

The plate is the size of an average dinner plate and measures approximately 24.8cm diameter and approximately 3cm tall from table to rim.
