Longpark Pottery in Torquay, Devon began creating pottery in the mid 1880's. This lovely little sugar bowl is believed to date to between the 1930's and mid 1940's. The pottery ceased trading in the 1950's.
A very pretty and utterly charming, vintage, small, pedestal style bowl in a high shine glazed clay with a pretty sgraffito style inscribed motto and scene. Known as Motto ware, this little bowl is inscribed with the words 'Be aisy with tha sugar'. A lovely little item.
Despite being quite a heavy and thick item, it has a delicate look to it and stands on a dainty pedestal foot. It holds approximately 120ml. This lovely bowl is marked with the maker's stamp on base. It would be a pretty and fun way to serve sugar, jam, dipping sauces etc..
The bowl measures approximately 9.2cm diameter at the widest point and is 8.5cm high.
It is in very good condition and looks and feels lovely to hold, but there is one area to point out. There is a small glaze chip underneath the edge of the frill top. It is not noticeable unless examined closely because it is beneath the rim and blends with the colours and shape. There is also a small raised dimple in the clay beneath the glaze from the time of manufacture.
