  • Details
A magnificent and very striking piece of 1950's thick moulded glassware believed to be made by Sowerby, Gateshead, England. This lovely item is listed as design number 2634 in their 1954 glassware catalogue. Although looking very much like a mantle vase, similar 'boat' shaped glass bowls were actually listed in their catalogue as salad bowls. I can imagine that this would look quite striking on a table serving a mixed green salad, but equally I can see this lovely bowl holding a trio of orchid plants or a table centre floral arrangement. A wonderful stylish and retro item.

It has deep angular (but not sharp) mouldings on the outer surface ending in pointed teeth around the rim. Inside the bowl the surface is smooth and on the base of the bowl there is a pretty starburst design. When the light hits the glass from certain angles there is a subtle and pretty rainbow prism type effect in the glass. The glass has clearly been well cared for in the past and still retains its sparkle and shine.

This beautiful and quite hefty bowl weighs just over 1Kg empty and holds approximately 880ml to the lowest point of the rim.

It measures approximately 24cm long, 12cm tall and 13.5cm wide. The glass is over 1cm thick in places.

It is in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. There are a few little air bubble inclusions inside the glass, which is normal for glassware of this age, the largest is on the base and is shown in the final photograph. The underside of the base shows some superficial scratching from use/standing over the years.

This listing is for the boat shaped glass bowl only. All other items in the photographs are for display or size comparison purposes only and are not included.

Please look at all of the photographs and the video as these form part of the description and help to show scale, colour and condition.
