Fabulous and very tactile coffee/teapot, 3 cups and saucers, a milk jug and sugar bowl set from Tremar Pottery in Cornwall. Tremar Pottery in East Cornwall was founded in the early 1960's by Roger and Doreen Birkett. Many of their studio pottery designs were influenced by Cornwall's Celtic heritage. The pottery closed in the 1980's.
The teapot/coffee pot in this set is slightly lighter in colour and may have originally been made in a different production run, however the colours all complement each other. The glaze has been applied thickly and in places is running down the pottery giving a nice effect. The base of all the pieces has been left unglazed giving contrast. It is very pretty and rustic looking, as well as feeling silky and also rough to the touch. This lovely set has no damage and looks like it has never been used, however there are a few little production quirks to point out. The sugar bowl is delightfully wobbly in shape but I feel this just adds massively to its charm. There is a tiny superficial firing crack in the underside of the coffee/teapot. This occurred as the clay shrank in the kiln and does not go all the way through. Similarly there are irregularities to the clay base of some of the saucers where the clay has bubbled/changed in the kiln. One of the cups has a small patch of unglazed clay visible in one of the ribs where the glaze missed and another cup has a small residual clay blob just below the rim and some others have blobs inside the cups. The milk jug and saucers also has some blobbed clay on the outer surface. These are all things that have happened at the time of manufacture and are not damage. Some of the pieces are stamped Tremar UK, but not all.
The pieces are heavy and thick. The empty coffee pot weighs just over 1Kg alone.
The coffee pot has a deep throated lid and short wide spout. There are no strainer holes between the body of the pot and spout, it is open between the two parts of the pot suggesting it may have been made for coffee not tea. The pot measures approximately 20.5cm tall to the tip of the lid, 20.5cm long including the handle and spout and is approximately 11cm wide. It holds 1000ml comfortably and pours very well without drips.
The saucers are approximately 14.5cm in diameter and 1.8cm tall. The milk jug is 11.5 cm long, 7.5cm tall and 7.5cm wide with a capacity of 220ml The sugar bowl measures approximately 11.5cm diameter, 4.2cm tall and holds 290ml. The cups stand 9.6cm tall, are 7cm wide and 9.5cm long including the handle and holds approximately 250ml.
This listing is for the Tremar set consisting of a tea/coffee pot, 3 cups and saucers, a milk jug and sugar bowl only. All other items in the photographs are for display or size comparison purposes only and are not included.
