An absolutely beautiful old hand made tile featuring a yellow background and a vibrant simplistic poppy like flower. This lovely old tile is quite bid and measures approximately 20cm by 20cm by 1cm thick. It weighs nearly 900g and has a lovely feel to it. The age of this tile is not know but it is though to be at least from the 1970's and possibly older.
The design has been built up with layers of coloured glaze. The central panel is a pale yellow with a bright and vibrant red flower. The flower has a dark brown/black simple addition of very fine glaze to give the illusion of petals and then a simple green stem. The red glaze is raised and stands proud of the background. Around the edges of the central decorative panel is a zagged edged bright yellow border that continues down the sides of the tiles but not onto the back.
It is a very pretty and striking tile and would very decorative as mounted wall art or could be used as a feature on a tile area.
The tile has signs of aging and some minor nicks and chips. The top glaze has a lovely, aged, crazed effect. There is a small hairline crack that runs the full thickness of the tile from the bottom edge up to the stem of the flower. This looks like a firing crack and can be seen on both the back and the face of the tile. The non linear wobbly nature of the crack is quite artistic. The tile is structurally sound. The corners and edges have had a few little knocks and there are a few small chips of yellow glaze missing from the corners and edges where the terracotta shows through. There is also a small flake of light yellow glaze missing from just the right of the flower.
Although there are these little signs of wear and age it just adds to the rustic and aged nature of the item and gives it an unmistakable aged and old feel that would be missing if the glaze and tile were pristine.
