A very pretty and totally unique, post production hand painted, tea or coffee pot decorated with a blue background, pink roses and gold coloured gilding. This lovely piece of English bone china carries the base stamp for Shelley suggesting the pot itself was manufactured in a time period from between 1938 to 1966. The pot has been moulded in the shape of the Gainsborough style design and was originally unpainted.
This beautifully decorated pot was not painted or decorated at the Shelley factory and will have left the factory as a piece of their basic, white ware range with only the plain white glaze finish on the piece. At some time since it left the factory it has been hand painted and decorated by persons unknown in this lovely and very pretty floral, slightly Chintz like, design, therefore the decoration on this pot is known as 'out of factory' or 'post production'.
Although not an original Shelley painted design, and therefore less valuable than a Shelley factory painted piece, it is none the less a very striking, beautiful and functional coffee pot that would be a glorious addition to an afternoon tea tray, dinner table or wedding table.
The bone china is in very good condition with no signs of damage or crazing and it pours very nicely. Overall it is in very good vintage, used condition. The gilding and paintwork does show signs of use and there are a few very minor scratches and minor areas of paint and gilding loss in places which are only really noticeable on very close inspection. The unglazed rim on foot of the pot shows some discolouration from age and use.
The pot holds a generous 1225ml approximately and has a lovely elegant shape and double lugged lid for security. The spout is long and elegant. Although originally designed as a coffee pot it would work just as well for tea and has strainer holes between the body and spout.
Looking at the paint work it could be that this has been embellished by two separate artists. The floral decoration is of a good quality and is very pretty, the golden gilding work however is less precise and looks a little uneven in places.
This lovely item measures approximately 21.5cm tall, 21.5cm long and 11.5cm wide.
