A fabulous and very lovely antique hand made and hand painted ceramic vase in a classical shape with Japanese Moriage style enamelling and gilding. There are no maker's marks and I can't find anything exactly like this so its age is not known for sure, however I believe it to be at least 100 years old and most likely dates to the late 19th Century when Japonisme was very popular.
It is very beautiful, with lovely vibrant and also pastel colours in a variety of textures and glazes built up in different thicknesses. The vase has been made in several pieces and then hand joined together before firing to form the beautiful shape. It is very elegant and graceful. I have photographed it outside in natural sunlight to show the full beauty of the colours at their best.
One of the nice things about this vase is that it changes colour palette when turned, so it could give off yellow, blue, pink or green vibes depending on the orientation and visible pattern.
This lovely vase is quite heavy and weighs just over 1.1 Kg. It measures approximately 15cm wide across the handles and stands 29.5cm high. The throat of the vase is quite narrow, perhaps suggesting it was meant as a decorative piece rather than a functional vase, and only measures approximately 4cm diameter inside.
This is an old item but has been well cared for. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks or damage, however it does have age related superficial glaze crazing throughout, which gives it a beautiful aged look when examined closely.
